Sedona City Council Votes to Proceed with Major Land Annexation

Sedona’s landscape might soon experience a significant transformation. The city is considering an annexation that would substantially increase its size, with the City Council recently taking the first step towards this expansion.

In a decisive move, the Sedona City Council voted 6-1 to initiate the annexation process by filing a petition with Yavapai County. This potential expansion involves a 3,422-acre area, located to the west of Sedona’s current boundaries, where the city’s wastewater treatment plant is situated. If approved, this annexation would add over 5 square miles to Sedona, which currently spans 18 square miles.

Councilwoman Kathy Kincella expressed her support for the annexation, emphasizing the importance of preserving the land. “Every time somebody wants to develop a lot, somebody comes and talks about how it’s one of the few undisturbed pieces of land. But that’s not really of the lots that’s within the city boundaries. This in my eyes is a pure and undeveloped piece of land that I’m interested in preserving that way for as long as we can,” she stated.

Conversely, Councilman Peter Furman was the sole member to vote against the proposal. He voiced concerns about the city’s unprecedented expansion, remarking, “Our city in its entire history has never expanded its boundaries. We’re surrounded by world-renowned beauty and why start to chip away at that now.”

The proposal is now set to be opened for public comment on January 14. Residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to express their opinions and concerns about the potential changes to Sedona’s geographic and administrative landscape.
