Michigan Governor to Advocate in Washington Against Tariffs and Education Cuts

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is preparing to visit Washington D.C. to address significant concerns over potential reductions to the U.S. Department of Education’s budget and the introduction of new tariffs affecting trade with Canada and other countries.

As additional tariffs from the Trump administration are set to be implemented early next month, Governor Whitmer expressed concern over the potential impact on Michigan’s economy. “Indiscriminate tariffs on our allies — they’re going to put Michiganders out of work,” she stated. “They’re going to hit Michigan harder than any other state and drive up costs for consumers.”

Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of stability and predictability for the business community, highlighting their apprehension about the ongoing trade issues. She plans to advocate on behalf of Michigan in Washington D.C., encouraging others to voice their concerns as well. “They’ve got to hear us loud and clear,” she remarked.

Business leaders have shown some relief with the recent delay of tariff increases on automotive-related trade between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. However, Glenn Stevens Jr., Vice President of Automotive and Mobility Initiatives at the Detroit Regional Chamber, warned, “For an industry that operates in three-to-five-year product cycles, this level of day-to-day uncertainty is debilitating.”

Although specific details of Whitmer’s trip, such as the date and itinerary, have not yet been disclosed, the governor aims to address these tariffs, which could adversely affect U.S. manufacturing, especially with Canada’s and the European Union’s responses to steel and aluminum tariffs.

In addition to trade concerns, Whitmer seeks to prevent substantial budget cuts to the U.S. Department of Education, which could significantly impact Michigan schools, particularly in areas supporting low-income students and special education services.
