Proposed licensing for Michigan gun dealers draws debate at the state Capitol

The debate over gun control in Michigan is heating up as state lawmakers consider a pair of bills that would impose new licensing requirements on gun dealers. The proposed legislation has drawn a clear line between advocates of gun rights and proponents of stricter gun control measures.

During a recent meeting of the state Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety committee, discussions centered around two significant bills: SB 583 and SB 584. The first bill mandates that each gun store obtain a state license for their operations, while the second outlines requirements for the secure storage of firearms in retail locations.

Gun rights advocates assert that these bills introduce unnecessary regulations, given that Michigan gun dealers are already under federal licensing requirements. Nick Buggia of the National Rifle Association remarked, “I believe these bills do not seek to solve an existing problem, but only add regulations and bureaucratic hurdles for the legal sale and possession of firearms, something guaranteed by the Constitution and upheld over and over again in the courts.”

On the other hand, gun control supporters argue that federal oversight is insufficient due to budget cuts under the Trump administration, which have weakened the federal agency’s ability to monitor gun dealers effectively. Marianna Mitchem from Everytown for Gun Safety highlighted the risks during her testimony, saying, “Most firearms are produced by a licensed manufacturer and shipped to a licensed dealer. It is at this stage that irresponsible dealers choose to ignore obvious red flags and proceed with illegal firearm sales to traffickers who in turn arm violent offenders and trigger pullers.”

State Senator Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), who chairs the committee, indicated that a vote on the licensing legislation could occur in the coming weeks. This move could align Michigan with 15 other states, such as Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama, which already have licensing requirements for gun dealers.
