Potential Investigation into Governor Whitmer’s Past Virtual Appearance
In a twist involving past political symbols and their interpretations, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer might soon be scrutinized by federal authorities over an emblem seen during a virtual event years ago. The emblem, “86 45,” became a point of contention, with “86” being slang in the restaurant world for removal and “45” representing President Donald Trump as the 45th president.
This development comes on the heels of a recent Justice Department indictment against former FBI Director James Comey. Last year, Comey posted an image of seashells spelling out “86 47,” which prosecutors interpreted as a threat to Trump’s life. As Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked, “other instances of threats against the president of the United States … will be investigated.”
Blanche emphasized the uniqueness of each case, stating, “You cannot compare,” and addressed the complexities in prosecutorial decisions. This statement followed Trump’s 2020 campaign’s accusation that Whitmer was “encouraging assassination attempts” with the emblem visible during a “Meet the Press” interview.
The timing of Whitmer’s interview was notably close to a thwarted kidnapping plot against her. When questioned about the potential investigation into Whitmer’s 2020 appearance, Blanche did not dismiss the possibility, noting the importance of context: “Every case is different. The facts are different.”
ABC News highlighted that conservative commentator Jack Posobiec had also tweeted “86 46” during Joe Biden’s presidency, adding layers to the ongoing discourse about political symbols.
Whitmer previously accused Trump of “inspiring and incentivizing and inciting this kind of domestic terrorism,” referencing a Muskegon rally where chants of “lock her up” erupted following the plot’s exposure. This sentiment was echoed in Lansing, where Trump questioned the plot’s legitimacy, stating, “I’m the one, it was our people that helped her out with her problem.”
The kidnapping plot resurfaced in public discussions when Trump suggested he might consider pardoning some involved individuals. Despite these tensions, Whitmer maintained a diplomatic approach, as she reached out to Trump to assert the seriousness of the convictions.
The legal proceedings around the plot have seen nine convictions and five acquittals. Last year, a federal appeals court upheld the convictions of two men, dismissing their claims of government entrapment as weak.
