Gov. Greg Gianforte announced the upcoming retirement of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Director Dustin Temple by year-end. Appointed in June 2023, Temple succeeded Henry “Hank” Worsech in the role after serving as the agency’s deputy director. Gianforte expressed gratitude for Temple’s two-decade-long service, highlighting his contributions to the department’s vision and mission.

Temple expressed pride in his achievements with FWP, stating, “I promised to deliver on FWP’s vision for Montanans, serving them well and protecting our Montana way of life for generations to come.” In retirement, he looks forward to seeing FWP continue its success. Gianforte praised Temple’s commitment to the agency’s core mission and enhancement of public access to Montana’s lands, a key achievement under Temple’s leadership.

Marina Yoshioka, currently the chief operating officer, will step in as acting director. FWP has witnessed significant leadership changes, with departures including Fisheries Chief Eileen Ryce and Enforcement Chief Dave Loewen. Temple has navigated challenges like grizzly bear management, elk and mule deer tag allocation, and the declining trout populations in state rivers.

Will Israel, Executive Director of the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association, praised Temple for aligning the agency’s mission with wildlife and citizens’ needs. Meanwhile, Frank Szollosi from the Montana Wildlife Federation encouraged the selection of a new leader who promotes public engagement and science-driven decisions in FWP’s future endeavors.
