Article Summary –

Luzerne County reversed its decision not to use mail-in ballot drop boxes after the ACLU sued the county board and manager Romilda Crocamo. The ACLU claims Crocamo lacked authority to ban them, as they have been used since 2022. A court hearing was canceled, but the lawsuit may continue.

Lawsuit Spurs Return of Mail-In Ballot Drop Boxes in Luzerne County

Luzerne County voters will again access mail-in ballot drop boxes before the election. This decision reversal follows a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania against the Luzerne County Board of Elections and County Manager Romilda Crocamo. The case might still continue.

The complaint was filed last week after Crocamo announced she wouldn’t deploy the county’s four drop boxes, citing security concerns. The ACLU claims the drop boxes have been used in every election since 2022 and argues Crocamo lacks the authority to unilaterally decide their removal.

A hearing for an injunction, demanding drop box deployment, was canceled on Monday morning. However, the ACLU insists the court must resolve whether Crocamo had the power to remove the drop boxes without the county board of elections’ input.

Neither Crocamo nor the Luzerne County elections board responded to comment requests.
