Genessee County Sheriff Enters Michigan Governor Race with Strong Union Support

Genessee County Sheriff Chris Swanson is not backing down in his quest for Michigan’s governorship, despite trailing in the polls. His campaign recently submitted over 26,000 signatures to qualify for the Democratic primary ballot.

Swanson faces stiff competition from Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who has been leading in the polls. However, Swanson remains optimistic, emphasizing a campaign built on bridging divisions and appealing to a “silent majority” seeking change from traditional political figures.

At a press event outside the state Bureau of Elections, Swanson stated that the election is far from a “coronation,” asserting, “I think this whole country is looking for something that’s different than the establishment candidate who has talking points. They want to see actions, and that’s what we bring. That’s what makes me different.”

Swanson’s campaign has garnered significant endorsements, notably from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and several local union chapters. He attributes his strategy to years of cultivating relationships, particularly with organized labor, which he believes is his key to success.

“These are races that are not won just on the campaign trail. They’re won from decades of foundation building. And I’ve done that. Twenty-three years going to Black Lake talking to retirees, being a dues-paying member for 33 years myself, a member of good standing, a member of the American Federation of Teachers 6244, that matters to labor,” Swanson remarked.

The United Auto Workers (UAW), a pivotal entity in Michigan Democratic politics, has yet to endorse a candidate. The UAW’s Region 1, covering eight Michigan counties, will begin the candidate screening process next month.

Both Swanson’s and Benson’s nominating petition signatures are under review by the Bureau of Elections, with the verification process expected to conclude by early summer.
